A woman has sparked widespread debate online after describing marriage as a form of “sex work,” a statement that has drawn both criticism and support from internet users.
The remark emerged in a video circulating on social media, in which the woman shared her perspective on relationships and the roles partners often assume within marriage. According to Eyes Of Lagos, she argued that many marriages operate as arrangements in which both spouses perform specific duties in exchange for certain benefits.
She claimed that women frequently enter marriage expecting financial security and stability, while taking on domestic responsibilities such as managing the home, raising children, and supporting the family structure. She suggested that these responsibilities, paired with the emotional and physical aspects of the relationship, form an implicit exchange—making the arrangement similar to prostitution in the sense that intimacy is tied to expectations and benefits.
The woman noted that while the exchange is not always openly transactional, relationships continue to function smoothly when both partners meet the perceived roles and obligations within the union.
Her comments quickly drew criticism from social media users who argued that marriage should not be compared to sex work and described the statement as disrespectful to the institution. One user, Adeyinka, said: “She’s trying to twist what God designed as marriage just to justify her thinking.” Donic Emperor added: “Some people will say anything online just to defend their lifestyle,” while Captain Cloudy called the comparison “unnecessary and misleading.”
A smaller group of commenters, however, suggested that the woman was simply highlighting practical realities of modern relationships, where roles and expectations are often defined on both sides.
The viral video has ignited broader discussions about marriage dynamics, gender roles, and financial responsibilities, with some insisting that marriage is rooted in love and mutual respect, while others point out the unspoken exchanges that often shape partnerships. The conversation continues to trend across social media platforms.
