The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 22-year-old man, Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun, from Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, over a viral video allegedly containing statements capable of inciting religious violence.
The video reportedly shows a young man dressed in the uniform of Jama’atu Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), allegedly making statements capable of threatening public peace and peaceful coexistence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the Zamfara State Police Command had activated its intelligence resources to identify those involved and commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The police also disclosed that the command engaged JIBWIS leadership at the national and state levels, adding that the organisation reportedly distanced itself from the alleged conduct and handed the suspect over to the police.
According to the statement, the investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will be charged before a competent court if sufficient evidence establishes that an offence was committed under applicable law.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Nigerians regardless of religious affiliation, stressing that appropriate lawful action would be taken against anyone found engaging in conduct capable of inciting religious hatred or threatening public peace.
“The Force will take appropriate lawful action against conduct capable of inciting religious hatred, provoking violence or threatening public peace,” the statement read.
The police also urged members of the public to refrain from circulating the video or sharing unverified information that could heighten religious tensions.
“ The public is advised to remain calm and allow the police to conclude the investigation,” the statement added.
The Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining public order and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country.
