In a ceremony marked by grandeur and academic tradition, Oxford University has conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt. honoris causa) upon Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The event took place at the historic Sheldonian Theatre, followed by celebratory receptions at All Souls and St John’s Colleges.

Chancellor Lord Christopher Patten and Vice Chancellor Dr. Irene Tracey presided over the ceremony, which honored Dr. Okonjo-Iweala alongside five other distinguished individuals: Sir Michael Palin, Warren East, Sir Demis Hassabis, Professor Salim Yusuf, and Anoushka Shankar. Each honoree was recognized for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a renowned economist and the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. “It is a great honor to be recognized today by Oxford University. The ceremony was marvellous, and I am humbled to be in the company of such illustrious individuals,” Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said.

The ceremony, steeped in tradition, was a testament to Oxford’s long-standing commitment to celebrating academic excellence and contributions to society. The receptions at All Souls and St John’s Colleges provided a fitting conclusion to the day’s events, allowing honorees, faculty, and guests to mingle and celebrate.

A particularly touching aspect of the day was the presence of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s family. Spouse Dr. Ikemba Iweala and daughter Dr. Onyeka Iweala joined in the celebrations, adding a personal touch to the prestigious event. “Having my family here made this honor even more special,” Dr. Okonjo-Iweala remarked.

The honorary degree is one of the highest accolades that Oxford University bestows, recognizing individuals who have made significant impacts in their fields. This year’s honorees reflect a diverse range of achievements, from arts and sciences to technology and humanitarian efforts.
