About a month ago, I had the privilege of accompanying Mr. Peter Obi on a six-state thank-you tour across the United States. During our travels from Dallas, Texas, to Washington, DC, we encountered a memorable moment at BWI Airport that exemplifies Mr. Obi’s dedication to the people he serves.

At the airport, we met Opeoluwa Solalu, a Department of Homeland Security employee. Opeoluwa approached me and requested a photo with His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi. After the photo, Opeoluwa expressed a heartfelt invitation: “I’m coming home to get married and would be honored to have you come.”

Given Mr. Obi’s packed schedule, I was uncertain if he could attend the wedding. Our commitments included the campaign flag-off in Edo and two other high-profile events. Yet, Mr. Obi is renowned for honoring invitations, particularly from ordinary citizens. He said, “Let’s get on with Edo, and if we finish, we’ll leave immediately for Lagos because of Ope.”

Upon arriving in Lagos, we spent over an hour searching for the wedding venue. Mr. Obi’s determination was unwavering, and we eventually found it. The joy and happiness in the atmosphere were palpable, from the security personnel to the newlyweds, their parents, and friends. Mr. Obi went further by instructing me to give a substantial gift to the couple and some of the attendees.

Mr. Obi shared with me how he often attended similar events during his tenure as governor, sometimes sitting quietly at the back to encourage people without drawing attention. He emphasized his priority of accepting invitations from everyday Nigerians. “They are the ones who need my advice, encouragement, and support,” he said.

When we met Opeoluwa, his excitement was evident. He gratefully said, “Thank you, Sir, for who you are and for the sacrifices you are making for Nigeria.” He then turned to me, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to interact with and take a picture with Mr. Peter Obi. For Opeoluwa, it was a dream and inspiration come true.

This experience underscores the humanity and dedication of Mr. Peter Obi, a leader who truly values and uplifts the everyday citizens of Nigeria. His actions speak volumes about his commitment to the people, demonstrating that true leadership is about being present and supportive, even in the smallest moments.
