Abia State, Nigeria – Former Governor of Anambra State, and the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party of Nigeria, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed his profound sorrow and outrage over the brutal attack on troops of Operation UDOKA at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State. The ambush, carried out by terrorists from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) on May 30, 2024, resulted in the tragic death of five soldiers.
In a heartfelt statement, Obi conveyed his condolences to Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, and the people of the state. “I am appalled and saddened by the attack on our brave soldiers in Abia State yesterday, resulting in the death of five soldiers. This dastardly act remains condemnable as it is a stark reminder of the escalating insecurity and violence that has continued to plague our nation under our collective watch. My heart goes out in solidarity and sincere condolences to my dear brother, Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, and the good people of the state,” he said.
Obi extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice. “More directly, my condolences to the families of the fallen heroes, who have paid the ultimate price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we owe it to them to demand accountability and justice.”
He lamented the ongoing violence and insecurity in Nigeria, calling it a clear dereliction of duty by the state. “Our failure as a nation to protect our citizens and security personnel is a clear dereliction of duty and sign of deficiency of the Nigerian state. The continued brutality and bloodshed in our nation must be met with swift and decisive action, not empty words and hollow promises.”
Peter Obi demanded a thorough investigation into the attack to ensure justice is served. “I condemn this atrocity in strong terms and demand an immediate and thorough investigation into this crime in order to identify and punish the culprits. We must not stand idly by while our nation is torn apart by violence and fear.”
He concluded by reiterating his commitment to a safer and more secure Nigeria. “We will continue to push for a better future, where our citizens and security forces are protected and valued.”
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for urgent action to address the security challenges facing the nation. As investigations continue, the nation mourns the loss of its brave soldiers and looks to its leaders for decisive action against those responsible.
