Presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming that he asked Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general election.
Obi, in a statement reacting to the report, described the claim as false, stressing that he has consistently advocated better welfare, equipment and protection for members of the Nigerian security forces.
“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue,” Obi said.
He reaffirmed his respect for members of the armed forces, particularly Nigerian Army personnel serving under difficult conditions.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said.
According to him, his concern has always been about ensuring that security personnel are adequately equipped and protected while carrying out their duties.
“I have consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel,” he added.
Obi also recalled his criticism following the death of soldiers during an insurgency attack, saying he had questioned why troops defending the country were left vulnerable when they needed assistance.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor said the welfare and security of military personnel would be a major priority if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority,” Obi said.
He added that soldiers “are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.”
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, describing it as misleading, while reaffirming his commitment to presenting his vision for a more secure Nigeria ahead of the 2027 election.
“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed POssible,” he said.
