Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Obidient Movement have strongly condemned the brutal murder of Honourable Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

His decomposing body was discovered near the 2nd Niger Bridge, 44 days after his abduction on December 24, 2024.

Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, describing Azuka as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for his constituents. He lamented that the lawmaker’s murder is not just an attack on an individual but a reflection of the worsening security crisis in Nigeria.

“This heinous act is a brutal assault on all of us and the sanctity of human life,” Obi stated. He called on the government to urgently address the country’s escalating insecurity and ensure that justice is served. While offering his condolences to Azuka’s family, Obi reiterated the need for a safer and more just Nigeria.

The Obidient Movement also condemned the killing, recalling that they had previously appealed to security agencies to secure Azuka’s release. The group emphasized that he was kidnapped while distributing aid to his constituents on Christmas Eve—a testament to his dedication to public service.

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the movement, described the murder as “cold-blooded” and called for an immediate and thorough investigation. “If people are not safe to carry out their constitutional rights, how can society progress?” he questioned.

The movement demanded that the Federal Government, the Anambra State Government, and all security agencies take swift action to apprehend and prosecute those responsible. They also urged increased security surveillance in the state to prevent further occurrences of such horrific crimes.

Both Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive security overhaul. They called for:

The immediate apprehension of those behind the killing.

Increased law enforcement presence and surveillance in Anambra State.

The neutralization of criminal hideouts and kidnappers’ dens.

A state of emergency on security to address rising violent crimes.

As the Onitsha community mourns the loss of Hon. Azuka, Obi and the Obidient Movement have vowed to continue advocating for a safer Nigeria where citizens can live and serve without fear. They urge all Nigerians to join hands in pushing for real security reforms, ensuring that such tragic incidents do not become the norm.

May his soul rest in peace.
