Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over reports that a Nigerian owned supertanker was seized by United States authorities over alleged crude oil theft and related illegal activities, describing the development as deeply troubling and damaging to Nigeria’s economy and global reputation.

In a statement, Obi said the incident highlights a longstanding crisis that has continued to undermine national growth and the future of young Nigerians. He noted that Nigeria has for years lost billions of dollars annually to crude oil theft due to weak institutions, poor accountability, and a culture of impunity.

He argued that the theft of the country’s most valuable resource directly contributes to deteriorating public services, worsening insecurity, and rising poverty levels. Obi called for a thorough investigation into the tanker seizure to establish the full facts and identify those responsible.

According to him, the incident should serve as a wake up call, stressing that crude oil theft cannot be carried out by ordinary citizens without the involvement of powerful networks. He urged the government to strengthen maritime security, reform regulatory agencies, and introduce transparent digital tracking of oil production.

Obi also emphasised the need to dismantle criminal cartels operating in the oil sector and to rebuild Nigeria’s international image through adherence to the rule of law and responsible resource management. He called on Nigerian authorities to work with international partners to ensure accountability, warning that the country cannot continue on its current path.

He concluded by stating that Nigeria has the resources to become a prosperous nation but requires competent and compassionate leadership focused on the welfare of its citizens.
