Church must move from pulpit, help build Nigeria - Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Church to take a more active role in rebuilding societal values, warning that Nigeria is grappling with widespread moral decay, rising rascality, and a diminishing sense of responsibility. Obi made the appeal in a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday, according to Njenje Media.

Obi said Nigeria’s challenges persist not because the nation lacks knowledge or potential, but because it has allowed core values to collapse. He lamented a society where shortcuts are celebrated, dishonesty rewarded, and integrity pushed aside—even among the highly educated.

Speaking on his return from overseas, Obi revealed that he attended the Fourth Enugu Diocesan Synod, where he delivered a lecture on “The Role of the Church in Youth Empowerment and Community Development.” He emphasized that the Church must shift “from pulpit to people” by embracing practical initiatives that strengthen moral foundations.

According to him, the Church — as the moral compass of society — must champion skills acquisition programmes, youth mentorship, sustainable community projects, and consistent engagement that transform faith into real opportunities.

Obi argued that such interventions would help young Nigerians rediscover discipline, hard work, and the understanding that character — not corruption — is the pathway to lasting progress.

“If we are to build a nation where integrity is rewarded and responsibility is cherished, the Church must take the lead in shaping ethical behaviour and strengthening societal character,” he wrote.

Obi added that by actively engaging communities, the Church can inspire a new generation and play a decisive role in Nigeria’s moral and social renewal.
