President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as earlier scheduled, stating that the reforms remain on course and will not be suspended or altered.

In a statement issued from the State House on Tuesday, the President said the tax reform measures, including laws that came into effect on June 26, 2025, and others scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026, represent a major effort to build a fairer and more competitive fiscal framework for the country.

According to him, the reforms are not intended to increase the tax burden on citizens, but to support structural realignment, harmonisation, and improved coordination within the tax system, while also strengthening the social contract between government and the public.

Tinubu called on stakeholders to support the implementation phase of the reforms, which he said has now moved fully into the delivery stage.

He acknowledged ongoing public debate over alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws, but maintained that no substantial issue had been identified to justify halting or disrupting the reform process. He added that confidence in public policy is built over time through consistent and well-considered decisions rather than reactive adjustments.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of laws already enacted. He also pledged continued collaboration with the National Assembly to address any issues that may arise during implementation.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to act in the public interest to sustain a tax framework that supports economic growth, shared prosperity, and collective responsibility.
