Kayode Egbetokun has reportedly been asked to step aside as Inspector General of Police, with President Bola Tinubu allegedly planning to replace him. Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is reportedly set to take over.

Sources within the Police Service Commission and senior police officials say Egbetokun was at the Presidential Villa on Monday and was reportedly instructed to prepare handover notes. One source claimed, “He is reportedly power-drunk and incompetent, with too many scandals surrounding his tenure. The President allegedly suggested he focus on treatment for kidney-related medical issues.” Some police officers reportedly celebrated the news, while it is alleged that the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, had wanted him to remain in office.

Egbetokun’s tenure has reportedly been controversial, with his stay extended beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service, drawing criticism from civil society groups over alleged favoritism and disregard for institutional discipline. It is also alleged that Principal Staff Officer Bukola Yemisi Kuti received rapid promotions under questionable circumstances due to her close personal relationship with Egbetokun, and that ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote was traced to the account of Victor, Egbetokun’s son.
