UK Football Association announces ban on transgender women

The Football Association, FA, has announced that transgender women will no longer be able to participate in women’s football in England from June 1.

This follows the material change in the law announced by the UK Supreme Court on April 16.
The apex court had unanimously ruled that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

“We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game,” a statement from the FA read in part.
Last month the FA confirmed that there were 20 transgender women registered among millions of amateur players.
However, there are is currently no record of registered transgender women in the professional game across the Home Nations.
