Anambra’s government is still servicing debts incurred under the administrations of former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano, according to the state Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor.
Okafor said Governor Chukwuma Soludo has not borrowed from any commercial bank since assuming office, but inherited significant financial obligations that continue to be deducted from the state’s monthly allocation from the Federation Account.
He said some of the inherited debts originated from borrowing during Obi’s administration and were subsequently carried into the Obiano administration.
“Governor Soludo has not borrowed a penny from any commercial bank since he assumed office but we realize that there are significant deductions every month from our FAAC. These debts were inherited from previous Governors—including debts taken during Peter Obi’s administration to His Excellency Willie Obiano. They are deducted straight from Anambra’s monthly allocation,” Okafor said.
The commissioner’s remarks have renewed questions over the financial obligations inherited by the Soludo administration and the long-term impact of borrowing decisions made by previous governments on Anambra’s finances.
