The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has called on Nigerians to remain patient amid ongoing security challenges, even as American military personnel are deployed in the country.

Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed the matter on Tuesday during the military’s end-of-month briefing in Abuja. He assured that Nigeria’s collaboration with the United States military will soon yield visible results, emphasizing that current support is already “significant” in areas such as intelligence sharing and specialised training.

Onoja explained that military operations take time to produce tangible outcomes and clarified that the US personnel are strictly advisory and not engaged in combat operations. “You may not see the impact immediately. There is always a gestation period in military engagements, but in the coming weeks and months, the difference will be clear,” he said.

The DHQ had previously confirmed the arrival of approximately 100 US troops and equipment at Bauchi Airfield on February 16, 2026, to provide technical assistance for counter-terrorism efforts in Nigeria.

In addition, the DHQ announced a nationwide heightened security alert ahead of the Easter celebrations. Onoja stated that troops have been placed on high alert to prevent potential attacks, noting that similar measures in past festive periods have proven effective.

He warned that security forces would maintain vigilance, as criminal elements often exploit festivities to carry out attacks. “We understand the tactics of these threats. They expect a relaxed atmosphere during celebrations, but we are fully prepared and will not relent,” Onoja added.
