Gunmen reportedly stormed a grassroots meeting of members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Obuoffia Ward in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, with one person reportedly shot during the incident.

Footage from the reported attack has emerged, showing panic among participants as the meeting was disrupted. The incident has raised concerns about political violence and the safety of party members as preparations intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The reported shooting comes amid growing concerns over an increasingly tense political atmosphere, with opposition politicians, supporters and campaign activities facing reported incidents of disruption and violence.

Peter Obi, who is now the NDC presidential candidate, has also been involved in several reported confrontations, including an alleged obstruction of his convoy in Benue State.

The latest incident comes as the 2027 presidential contest takes shape, with Obi emerging as one of President Bola Tinubu’s major challengers alongside Atiku Abubakar. Reuters and AP have previously described the political environment as tense, with insecurity, economic difficulties and divisions within the opposition contributing to heightened concerns ahead of the election.
