Family members of a kidnapped National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, identified as Abba, fear he has been killed by his captors despite paying a ransom of N10 million for his release.

According to the family, all communication with the kidnappers abruptly stopped after the ransom was paid, raising concerns that the corps member may have been murdered. Sources revealed that while the abductors initially demanded N10 million, they later made additional demands, including motorcycles, after receiving the payment.

“Since receiving the N10 million ransom, Abba’s abductors have completely cut off all contact with the family,” said security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama. In response, the family has decided not to comply with any further demands.

In light of the situation, the family has begun preparations for funeral prayers in absentia, in accordance with Islamic traditions. “Abba’s family will hold his Janaza (Gha’ib) prayer on Friday, March 6, following Islamic rites,” they said.

The relatives expressed gratitude to individuals and groups who offered support during the ordeal. “We are deeply thankful for the prayers, donations, and kind words extended to us in this difficult period. May the Almighty reward your generosity abundantly,” the family said.

Despite these fears, the family continues to hold out hope that Abba may still be alive. “If he has passed on, may Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” a family member said.

Prior to the ransom payment, the corps member had pleaded publicly for urgent help after being tortured in captivity by terrorists locally referred to as bandits. Reports indicate that Abba was repeatedly beaten, kicked, and humiliated by his captors while desperately begging for his life.

A disturbing video obtained by authorities shows Abba, speaking in Hausa, lying on the ground as the bandits struck him mercilessly with long sticks while others punched and kicked him. In the footage, he is heard crying out to Nigerians for help, invoking God and Prophet Muhammad in desperate appeals.

“Please help me for God’s sake. Please help my life. I may soon die in this situation,” Abba pleaded as the attackers continued the assault. Two of the bandits can be seen repeatedly flogging him with sticks while he struggled to breathe, weakened by the relentless beating.
