Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of killing a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike earlier this year. The suspect, identified as Chibunna Nwafor and known locally as Offonwadile, was picked up during an intelligence-led raid on his hideout in Umueri after weeks of coordinated surveillance.

Police sources indicate that the breakthrough followed sustained cooperation from local residents who had shared information on the suspect’s movements. He had reportedly been on the run since the attack in early 2025, a crime that triggered widespread condemnation across Anambra State.

The victim, whose name remains withheld out of respect for her family, was several months pregnant when she was attacked. Her death renewed public pressure on security agencies to deliver swift accountability for violent crimes involving women.

Nwafor has been transferred to a specialised investigative unit for detailed interrogation. Detectives are probing the circumstances of the killing and assessing whether others may have assisted him before or after the incident.

The Police Command’s spokesperson confirmed that the investigation remains active and assured residents that every individual linked to the crime will be prosecuted. The spokesperson also commended citizens who provided essential intelligence, noting that community collaboration remains a critical asset in law enforcement operations.

Legal analysts note that the suspect could face multiple charges, including murder, once the case file is completed. The incident has drawn close attention from women’s rights advocates and human rights groups that continue to monitor developments.

Residents of Ogbunike and neighbouring communities have welcomed the arrest but stress the need for a thorough and transparent trial. Community leaders say a successful prosecution would send a strong message against gender related violence and help rebuild public confidence in local security measures.
