Boko Haram insurgents have overrun a military camp in Borno State, killing the commanding officer and several other personnel, officials say. The attack occurred in Kukawa Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday.

According to a local source, the terrorists struck the base around 12:30 a.m., approaching from multiple directions. “They stormed the town and attacked the military camp,” the source said. Another security insider reported that the insurgents forced troops out of the base, set vehicles on fire, and seized ammunition. “I cannot confirm the total casualties, but it is very sad that we lost the CO,” the source added.

The Kukawa base had previously faced a Boko Haram assault last month, which was repelled by the troops. The commanding officer was widely praised for the successful defence, earning accolades from the community and recognition on social media. Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, the lawmaker representing Kukawa in the Borno State House of Assembly, also celebrated the soldiers at that time.

Reacting to Monday’s incident, Lawan described the overrunning of the base as deeply troubling.

The latest attack follows recent violence in Ngoshe town, Gwoza Local Government Area, where insurgents targeted a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons camp, killing an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians.
