Over 40 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in coordinated attacks by militants of the Islamic State-backed Boko Haram faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in Borno State to Maiduguri to assess the situation and receive detailed briefings on the attacks. Sources also noted that scores of Boko Haram fighters were killed while attempting to overrun the bases.
The militants reportedly burned armoured tanks, military vehicles, and seized large quantities of ammunition. The attacks come less than 24 hours after insurgents killed civilians and abducted women in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area, where they stormed a military post and an IDP camp.
Boko Haram and ISWAP have repeatedly targeted Nigerian military personnel in Borno, killing hundreds and displacing thousands. Recent assaults have included attacks on Forward Base operations at Banki junction, Jakana, and other strategic locations, often resulting in significant losses of soldiers and military equipment.
Military sources said the insurgents employed explosives and heavy gunfire, making some bases inaccessible for hours. The incidents highlight the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP, despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the region.
The Nigerian Army continues to investigate and respond to the attacks, with efforts ongoing to locate missing personnel and restore security in the affected areas.
