Aguata, Anambra State | July 9, 2025
Security operatives led by the Anambra State Police Command have successfully repelled a violent shooting incident in the early hours of today at Oko and Ekwulobia flyover, located in Aguata Local Government Area. The swift response by the Joint Security Task Force led to the neutralization of one armed assailant, recovery of two firearms, and seizure of four vehicles used by the gunmen.
According to a statement issued by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, the recovered weapons include an AK-47 rifle and a pump-action shotgun. The vehicles retrieved at the scene were identified as:
- A red Toyota Camry (Reg. No: ENU 58 SC)
- A custom-coloured GLK Mercedes Benz (no registration)
- A golden Lexus 330 (Reg. No: ENU 815 AP)
- An ash-coloured Toyota Highlander (Reg. No: GDD 517 RW)

The hoodlums reportedly opened fire indiscriminately beneath the Ekwulobia flyover, causing panic and chaos. The Joint Security Team responded swiftly, engaging the assailants in a fierce gun battle.
Tragically, the gunfire led to the fatal shooting of two unsuspecting civilians, and a brown Toyota Sienna, believed to be assigned to the Anambra State Vigilante Group, was set ablaze during the confrontation. The remains of the victims have been recovered and deposited in a morgue.
In a related incident, the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters came under attack by gunmen. However, the gallant officers on duty successfully repelled the assault. No casualties were recorded at the station, and a manhunt is currently underway to track the fleeing assailants.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has since ordered intensified patrols and reinforced security across the area. Residents have been urged to remain calm and vigilant as the security forces maintain their onslaught operations and commit to restoring peace in the region.
“Further developments will be communicated,” the statement concluded.
