Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), publicly displaying his membership card to supporters in Kano, in a move seen as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development came after Kwankwaso resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the party he led into the 2023 presidential race. During the ceremony, he was formally registered into the ADC, with his membership card presented as a symbolic gesture of the defection.
Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement attended in large numbers, with many expected to follow him into the ADC, strengthening the party’s base ahead of the next general elections.
The event in Kano included preparations for a large-scale registration exercise, anticipating a surge in new members aligned with Kwankwaso’s political influence.
Kwankwaso also used the occasion to rally his supporters, urging them to back the ADC as a platform for political change, as opposition leaders work to build a united front against the ruling establishment ahead of 2027.
Analysts describe the defection as one of the most significant shifts in Nigeria’s opposition landscape in recent months, with expectations that other political figures could follow suit.
