Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, confirming a major development in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, the former Kano State governor announced his immediate resignation from the party, describing the decision as difficult but necessary given the current direction of national politics.
Kwankwaso, who served as the NNPP’s National Leader and Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership and members for their support during his time in the fold.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he stated.
He explained that the decision was driven by the need for “strategic realignment”, noting that the evolving political landscape requires identifying with a platform that offers a stronger opportunity to effect meaningful change.
Notably, the statement did not disclose the specific political party he intends to join, leaving his next move open to interpretation.
Kwankwaso also acknowledged the contributions of party stakeholders, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and party structures at all levels. He further appreciated members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty and commitment.
Despite his exit, he emphasized the need for continued collaboration among political actors in pursuit of national development.
The resignation is expected to have significant implications for the NNPP, a party widely associated with Kwankwaso’s political influence, particularly in northern Nigeria.
Political observers say the move signals the beginning of broader realignments within the opposition, as key figures begin positioning ahead of the next election cycle.
With no official confirmation yet on his next political destination, attention now turns to his next steps and the potential alliances that could shape Nigeria’s political future in the coming months.
