LAGOS—Onyeka Onwenu, the celebrated Nigerian singer, actress, media personality, and politician, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday evening. Born on January 17, 1952, Onwenu’s vibrant life came to a sudden end following a performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday party, Njenje Media News reports.
Eyewitness reports reveal that Onwenu collapsed shortly after her performance. “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” recounted a witness at the event.
Onwenu, often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” was a pioneering figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Her contributions to music, film, and public service earned her numerous accolades, including an Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2006. Her career was marked by a relentless commitment to activism, particularly evident in her 2000 protest against the Nigerian Television Authority over unpaid royalties.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was a dedicated advocate for women’s development and cultural preservation in Nigeria. She served in various political roles and was known for her strong stance on human rights.
The Igbo nation mourns the loss of this iconic figure, whose impact transcended the entertainment industry. Onwenu’s death follows the recent passings of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, marking a period of profound loss for the Southeast region of Nigeria.
Onwenu’s legacy as a cherished talent and tireless advocate will continue to inspire future generations.
