A police officer and five other persons, on Tuesday, died in a ghastly motor accident that happened at Ogbese on the Akure/Owo highway in Ondo state.

It was gathered that the accident which involved a red Man Diesel Truck and one Toyota Sienna with the number plate, FFN 310 PU, occurred due to over-speeding.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the State (FRSC), Ezekiel SonAllah said the accident involved eight persons transiting on the highway.

Mr SonAllah attributed the cause of the accident to speed violation (SPV), wrongful overtaken (WOV) and loss of control (LOC).

He explained that the items recovered from the scene of the accident included money, and mobile phones that had been handed over to the police at Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

“The six corpses have been deposited at the general hospital morgue, Akure while obstruction has been cleared and the vehicles, money and phones were handed over to the police,” the FRSC boss said.

While calling on motorists to abide by the prescribed speed limit when on the highway, Mr SonAllah urged all drivers to always ensure they install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles.

He advised the drivers to always be “safety conscious” at all times and avoid overtaking if it is not safe.

“Passengers should not only warn drivers in an event of excess speed but also report them to security agencies manning the highways,” Mr SonAllah added.
