Momentum appears to be building ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship race, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu openly backed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor following a strategic meeting at Lagos House, Marina.

The gathering, attended by top government officials and influential party figures, came after Hamzat formally signaled his intention to run for governor. Key members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, were present during the closed-door discussions.

Speaking after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described his deputy as a seasoned and dependable figure who has gained the administration’s trust over the years. He noted that Hamzat’s deep involvement in governance and consistent performance make him well-prepared to take on the state’s top job.

The governor emphasized that the endorsement reflects confidence in continuity, pointing to Hamzat’s experience and long-standing role in shaping policy and execution within the current administration.

With this development, early political alignments are beginning to take shape, as party stakeholders appear to be rallying around a familiar face in what could become a closely watched succession race in Lagos.
