U.S. President Donald Trump Friday morning told CNN that Cuba “is going to fall pretty soon.”
“Cuba is going to fall pretty soon. They want to make a deal so badly,” he said in a phone interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, while highlighting US military successes in his second term. “I’m going to put Marco Rubio over there and we’ll see how that works out. We’re really focused on this right now. We’ve got plenty of time, but Cuba’s ready — after 50 years.”
“I’ve been watching it for 50 years, and it’s fallen right into my lap. It’s fallen, but nevertheless, it’s fallen right into the lap. And we’re doing very well,” he added.
A day earlier at the White House, Trump said it’s only a “question of time” before American Cubans can return home, suggesting this could follow the administration’s current focus on the conflict with Iran.
“He’s doing a good job, and the next step will be the special Cuba,” Trump said of his Secretary of State. “He’s waiting, but he says, ‘Let’s get this one finished first.’ We could do everything at once, but that can cause problems. Watching countries over the years, if you move too fast, bad things happen. We’re not going to let anything bad happen to this country.”
