As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, staged a street rally in Akure, Ondo State, declaring their backing for his presidential ambition.

The demonstration, organised by members of the Village Boys Movement in collaboration with supporters of the African Democratic Congress, saw participants march through key parts of the city. The procession began around the Fiwasaye Secondary School axis, moved along Adesida Road, and ended at the party’s state secretariat.

Leading the rally were the Ondo State chairman of the ADC, Asiwaju Ayowole Adekoyegun, and Ayo Williams, who coordinates the Village Boys Movement in the state. Both figures described the march as part of efforts to build awareness and strengthen support for Obi within the party and across the electorate.

Addressing participants, Adekoyegun portrayed Obi as a credible and capable figure, insisting he remains one of the strongest contenders for the presidency. He argued that the former governor’s performance in previous elections demonstrated nationwide appeal, including in regions where he was not initially expected to perform strongly.

He also expressed confidence in the ADC’s prospects, projecting a political shift in the coming election cycle and suggesting that the current administration led by Bola Tinubu would face significant opposition.

Williams, on his part, rejected claims that the rally was financially induced, maintaining that participants showed up out of personal conviction. He further highlighted Obi’s policy-driven approach, particularly referencing his interest in tackling Nigeria’s electricity challenges and broader economic issues.

Criticism of the current government also featured prominently during the event, with speakers questioning its performance and calling for a change in leadership ahead of 2027.
