Abia State has gotten the first non-indigenous Head of Service (HOS), Benson Ojeikere, who hails from Edo State.

Ojeikere joined the state civil service following his automatic employment by the then state government after he emerged as the best state youth corps member in the 1999/2000 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service year.

Before he was appointed the HOS, Ojeikere was the Permanent Secretary in the Government House, Umuahia.

The state Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu, told journalists yesterday after the weekly Executive Council meeting (Exco) that Ojeikere was sworn into office. He disclosed that Ojeikere had risen through the ranks to be a Director, and a Permanent Secretary and had justified the confidence reposed in him after he was retained/employed.

Kanu described Ojeikere’s elevation as an unprecedented landmark appointment given the fact that he is not an Abian, but because Governor Alex Otti believes in meritocracy, which rules no dividing line between an Abia citizen and a resident .
