Photo News: American University Of Nigeria 15th Commencement: Prof. Mike Ozekhome Honoured With Doctorate Degree And Delivers Keynote Lecture


Yola, Nigeria – The American University of Nigeria (AUN) recently celebrated a significant milestone with its 15th Commencement activities, held from May 16th to 18th, 2024. The event featured numerous dignitaries, including Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR, Ph.D, who delivered the Commencement lecture and was conferred with the prestigious degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) (Honoris Causa).

Prof. Ozekhome’s involvement was a highlight of the celebrations. Known for his remarkable contributions to law and human rights, he presented an inspiring keynote lecture titled “The Role of the University in Creating a Legacy and Impact on the World: AUN as a Case Study.” His speech, which spanned 44 minutes, explored how universities can foster enduring legacies and significant global impacts, using AUN as an exemplary model.

The day before the main event, Prof. Ozekhome interacted with AUN law students at the School of Law, sharing his insights and experiences. He also attended the Honors Society events, further engaging with the academic community. His guided tour of the university showcased AUN’s state-of-the-art facilities, comparable to those of Ivy League institutions in the United States and other top-tier universities globally.

The Commencement activities were attended by a host of notable figures. The founder and promoter of AUN, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar GCON, Waziri of Adamawa, played a prominent role in the celebrations. Also present were the President of the University, Prof. Dewayne Frazier, and the Governor of Katsina State, among others. The event was further distinguished by the presence of traditional rulers and foreign envoys, including the Canadian High Commissioner, Ambassador Christoff James; the Indian High Commissioner, Ambassador Balasumbramanian; and the Ambassador of Rwanda, Christoph Bazivamo.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of the graduating students and the university’s ongoing commitment to excellence in education.
