The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is facing a growing migration crisis after a fresh wave of irregular migrants crossed into the territory from neighbouring Morocco, prompting local authorities to call for emergency intervention.
Ceuta’s regional government has appealed to Spain’s central government to declare a national emergency, warning that reception centres have reached capacity and that local resources are under severe strain. Officials say many new arrivals are being housed in temporary facilities as authorities struggle to cope with the influx.
Reports indicate that between 1,500 and 3,000 migrants have entered Ceuta in recent days, although some social media posts have claimed the figure is much higher. Those larger estimates have not been confirmed by major international news organisations.
The crisis has sparked political debate in Spain, with calls from Ceuta’s regional leadership for stronger border protection, including military assistance. However, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has not announced a military deployment. Instead, Madrid has reinforced police and border security personnel, while coordinating closely with Moroccan authorities to manage the situation and prevent further crossings.
Spain’s Interior Ministry has maintained that the current situation does not meet the legal threshold for declaring a national emergency, despite mounting pressure from local officials. The migration crisis remains fluid, with authorities monitoring developments and preparing additional humanitarian support if arrivals continue.
