The Congolese diaspora and the wider African boxing community are mourning the death of Congolese professional boxer Roméo Katompa, popularly known by his ring name “Bololo,” following a gruesome attack in Johannesburg.

According to reports, Katompa was brutally assaulted and burned alive during the night of July 16 to 17. Preliminary intelligence reports from South Africa indicate that the killing may be linked to the latest wave of xenophobic violence spreading across several major commercial centres, where foreign nationals have increasingly become targets of extremist vigilante groups.

The incident has sparked outrage among members of the Congolese community and boxing supporters, with renewed concerns over the growing insecurity facing migrants and other foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
