Donald Trump has officially begun his second term as president of the United States, taking the oath of office at noon local time (17:00 GMT) in Washington, DC. In his inaugural address, Trump reiterated grievances against political opponents and pledged to dismantle what he described as a “radical and corrupt establishment” in the country.

During his speech, Trump announced his intention to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, stating that American ships were being “severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape, or form.” While he did not provide details, he emphasized that his administration would prioritize ensuring the canal operates in line with U.S. interests.

Trump also addressed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Gaza, highlighting the release of Israeli captives as a significant achievement. He described the ceasefire as a step toward peace in the region and credited his administration for facilitating the deal. Trump expressed his desire to be remembered as a “peacemaker and unifier” while contrasting his efforts with what he called the failures of outgoing President Joe Biden to pressure the Israeli government into halting its bombardment of Gaza.

Immigration reform remains a central focus of Trump’s presidency. He announced plans to declare a national emergency at the southern border to halt illegal entry and begin the process of deporting “millions of criminal aliens.” Trump also pledged to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for court hearings, and vowed to deploy U.S. troops to the border to enhance security. Critics have condemned his rhetoric, accusing him of dehumanizing migrants, but Trump defended his policies as necessary for restoring order and protecting American jobs.

Justice reform was another key theme in Trump’s address. He pledged to “restore fair, equal, and impartial justice” and condemned what he described as the misuse of state power to target political opponents. Referring to his own legal challenges before re-election, Trump accused Democrats of orchestrating a “politically motivated witch hunt” to derail his campaign. While he did not provide evidence for his claims, Trump emphasized his commitment to upholding constitutional rule of law.

Reflecting on his first term, Trump recounted surviving an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was shot in the ear. He attributed his survival to divine intervention, saying, “I believe I was saved by God to Make America Great Again.”

Trump also addressed the controversies surrounding his legal troubles, including four criminal indictments related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election and a conviction for falsifying business records linked to hush-money payments. Despite these challenges, he has avoided penalties and framed these experiences as evidence of his resilience.

As Trump begins his second term, his agenda includes bold promises to reform immigration, secure justice, and assert American interests abroad. While his plans have sparked both praise and criticism, Trump continues to position himself as a disruptor determined to challenge the political establishment and lead the country in a new direction. His return to the White House marks the beginning of another contentious chapter in American politics.
