The Federal Executive Council has approved a new Exit Benefit Scheme that will provide retiring Federal Civil Servants with a gratuity equivalent to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument.
The scheme, effective from 1 January 2026, represents a major step in the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen the welfare framework of the Civil Service. It ensures that officers who have served the nation for at least 10 years retire with dignity and financial security.
A statement issued on Thursday by Eno Olotu, Director of Public Relations in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, confirmed the approval.
The decision followed extensive consultations and technical input from an Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee established by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service. The committee collaborated with the National Pension Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Accountant-General to design a sustainable and practical implementation plan.
The Exit Benefit Scheme complements the existing Contributory Pension Scheme, providing a substantial financial safety net for Federal Civil Servants across ministries, extra-ministerial departments, and agencies.
The Head of the Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, praised the Federal Executive Council for what she described as a landmark decision. She said the approval reflects the administration’s recognition of the dedication and professionalism of Civil Servants and enhances confidence in the government’s commitment to their welfare.
“This initiative significantly strengthens the retirement package of our officers and aligns with ongoing reforms to build a motivated, performance-driven, and people-centred Civil Service,” Walson-Jack said. She added that detailed implementation guidelines would be released soon.
The introduction of the Exit Benefit Scheme comes 22 years after the establishment of the Contributory Pension Scheme and underscores the government’s dedication to improving welfare and securing the future of the Federal Civil Service.
