The House Committee on Constitution Review has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda from the public on the review of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), Njenje Media News reports.
The Committee, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has now fixed April 30, 2024, as the new deadline.
This extension is an outcome of a resolution of the House Committee on Constitution Review during its last meeting and provides additional time for stakeholders, organisations, and interested individuals to contribute their ideas and perspectives on aspects of the Constitution they want to be amended.
The Committee is thus committed to ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in this important national endeavour.
A spokesman for the House Committee on Constitution Review, Rep. Chief Dr. Philip Agbese, in emphasising the significance of public participation in the Constitution Review process, stated, “The extension of the deadline demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that the Nigerian people are actively involved in shaping our nation’s future. We encourage everyone to visit our website, www.hccr.gov.ng, to learn more about the process and submit their memoranda.”
According to the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Constitution Review process is a priority for the 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives. “We are resolute in managing this process to deliver an amended Constitution that authentically mirrors the aspirations of Nigerians. This is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and we are fully committed to getting it right,” he emphasised.
The previous deadline for submission was April 10, 2024.
