The Kano State Hisbah Board has detained two teenage boys, Umar Yahaya, 19, and Musa Al-Hassan, 18, over an alleged plan to host what authorities described as a “gay” birthday party in the state.

Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Mujahideen Aminudeen, said the teenagers were apprehended following intelligence that they were organising the event shortly after Eid-el-Fitr prayers. According to Aminudeen, the suspects, who reportedly referred to themselves as Yan Daudu, had used social media to invite attendees from across Nigeria. The planned gathering was said to include dancing and activities considered immoral by the board.

During questioning, the teenagers reportedly admitted their intentions and expressed remorse. Rather than face prosecution, they have been placed under the board’s supervision for religious counselling and guidance.

Aminudeen added that the Hisbah Board will increase monitoring of mosques and public spaces in the final days of Ramadan to prevent gatherings perceived as inappropriate.

The Kano State Hisbah Board enforces Islamic moral codes across the state.
