The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has commenced enforcement of its ban on sachet alcohol and alcohol sold in small PET bottles across Nigeria. The move follows earlier announcements aimed at reducing alcohol abuse, particularly among young people and low income groups.
NAFDAC officials say enforcement teams have been deployed to markets and distribution centres, warning manufacturers and retailers to comply or face sanctions. The agency argues that sachet alcohol is often cheaply priced and easily accessible, contributing to underage drinking and public health risks.
Industry stakeholders have expressed concern over the impact on jobs and small scale businesses, calling for a phased approach. However, public health advocates support the crackdown, citing links between excessive alcohol consumption and rising cases of addiction, violence, and health complications.
NAFDAC maintains that the policy is part of a broader strategy to regulate alcohol consumption and protect public health. The agency says it will continue stakeholder engagement but insists that compliance is non negotiable. The enforcement marks a significant shift from policy to action, with wide social and economic implications.
