Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, claiming that inappropriate advances were made during a visit to Akpabio’s residence in Akwa Ibom State. The allegations have sparked a public outcry, with calls for a thorough investigation into the matter.

In response to the accusations, Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, has called for justice and transparency. Kingibe, who had previously commented on the ongoing controversy involving the seating arrangements in the Senate, clarified her stance, stating that she was unaware of the sexual harassment allegations at the time of her remarks.

Kingibe emphasized that her comments were not intended to undermine Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims. She expressed her unwavering commitment to fighting all forms of violence against women and girls and reiterated the need for an impartial investigation into the allegations.

“Justice should prevail, and it should not be influenced by anyone’s position or status,” Kingibe said in a statement. “This is about ensuring that women’s rights are respected, and that they have the protection they deserve.”

As a strong advocate for women’s rights, Kingibe has been at the forefront of several initiatives, including the promotion of the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and efforts to secure special seats for women in the Nigerian Senate. She called on her colleagues to prioritize the protection of women, ensuring that gender equity remains a cornerstone of governance.

The case has drawn attention to the need for greater efforts to protect women in Nigerian politics and society, with several organizations and lawmakers voicing support for the victims of sexual harassment. The ongoing public conversation has sparked a broader call for justice and accountability across all levels of governance.
