A 43 year old Nigerian man, Michael Okwudili Okita, has been remanded in police custody for eight days in Nicosia, Cyprus, following his arrest over the alleged possession of about 350 grammes of a substance suspected to be cannabis.
The arrest followed a search conducted by officers of the Crime Prevention Branch of the Nicosia Police Directorate at the suspect’s residence on September 1, 2026.
According to police testimony presented before the court, officers recovered approximately 350 grammes of a substance believed to be a narcotic, which was allegedly packaged in a manner suggesting it was prepared for sale.
The police also seized a precision scale suspected to contain traces of narcotics.
Police Sergeant Cemal Ramiz, who testified in court, said the suspect was arrested during the operation and an investigation was subsequently launched into the alleged offence.
The police told the court that further investigations would focus on determining where Okita allegedly obtained the suspected drugs. The seized substances will also be sent for laboratory analysis, while police plan to obtain additional statements and examine available security camera footage.
Based on the evidence presented, the prosecution requested that the suspect be remanded in custody for three days to allow investigators to continue their work.
However, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ordered Okita to remain in police custody for eight days to facilitate further investigation.
The allegations against the suspect have not been proven in court.
