A National Youth Service Corps official in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been detained by police following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.

Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. Sources said she underwent the procedure before developing health issues that later proved fatal. She has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape Sagamu Road.

The development comes weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances in the same area. Mary, who was posted to Ogun State Television, was reportedly found dead in her residence, with the cause yet to be established.

Sources indicated that both deceased corps members knew each other, although authorities maintain the two incidents are not connected.

In Ariyo’s case, Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector for Abeokuta South, is alleged to have had a personal relationship with her, which reportedly led to the pregnancy. The circumstances surrounding the termination and subsequent complications are now a focus of the investigation.

Police confirmed that Olalekan is being held at the state command headquarters in Eleweran as inquiries continue. Spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said the matter is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department but declined to comment on the arrest or alleged involvement of the official.

Authorities of the NYSC in the state are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
