Popular comedian and media personality Isaac Nwosu, widely known as Aiza Nwosu, has been killed by gunmen in Awka, Anambra State, alongside another man who was attacked at a separate location.
The incidents happened late on Sunday, August 30, 2026, around S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo and Capital City Road in Amaenyi.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicated that three unidentified men travelling in a silver coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks.
An eyewitness said the assailants followed Nwosu from his residence, intercepted his vehicle and opened fire. The comedian was reportedly found dead inside his vehicle after the shooting.
“The assailants, numbering about three and driving in a tinted vehicle, trailed the comedian from his home, double-crossed his vehicle and later attacked him, shooting him dead,” the eyewitness said.
The witness further said the gunmen subsequently attacked another man by the roadside, took his belongings and escaped from the area.
The suspects reportedly fired several shots into the air while fleeing, triggering panic among residents.
The reason for the attacks remains unknown, although some residents speculated that the killings might be connected to cult activities.
Confirming the deaths on Monday, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had commenced investigations while efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.
“The Anambra State Police Command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the State capital, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” Ikenga said.
He explained that preliminary information available to the police indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver coloured Toyota Corolla, with its registration number yet to be established, allegedly attacked the victims at two different locations.
Police patrol teams were immediately deployed to the affected areas after receiving reports of the shootings.
Ikenga said officers recovered the victims from Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, before taking them to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
“While one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second victim has been identified as Isaac Nwosu, male, also known as ‘Azia’,” the police spokesman said.
Items recovered from the scene included N7,550 cash, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings, describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to peace and security in the state.
Ama ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation.
He also instructed security personnel to increase patrols, surveillance operations and intelligence gathering in Awka and surrounding communities.
The police urged residents, community leaders, motorists and business owners who witnessed the attacks or possess information about the suspects or the vehicle used in the operation to come forward and assist the investigation.
The command said information supplied by members of the public would be kept confidential.
