United States President, Mr. Joe Biden ordered US flags to be flown at half-mast for the next 10 days until the Queen’s state funeral.
The President issued a rare proclamation calling for the nation’s flags to be lowered to mark the Queen’s death, not just at the White House, but at all government buildings, embassies and military bases around the world “until sunset on the day of interment”.
His order applied throughout the United States and its territories and possessions, and on US Navy ships.
In his edict, Mr Biden said it was a “mark of respect” to “a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States”.
Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, also ordered flags to be lowered at the US Capitol.
A spokesman for Ms Pelosi said: “Speaker Pelosi has ordered the flags at the US Capitol to be flown at half-staff due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
On Thursday night, Mr Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited the British Embassy in Washington where they signed a book of condolence.
