The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said President Bola Tinubu has his respect, stressing that he would not engage in personal attacks or verbal abuse against the President or any other political office holder.
Obi made the remarks on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, themed: “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
The former Anambra State governor spoke while addressing issues surrounding the state’s debt and the broader need for accountability in public office.
According to Obi, political disagreements should focus on policies, governance and performance rather than personal attacks against individuals.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.
He, however, stressed that respect for public office holders should not prevent citizens or the media from questioning their decisions, policies and performance.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he added.
Obi further noted that the character and conduct of political leaders could influence the values and standards of the wider society.
He urged media editors to critically examine political leaders based on their records, statements and qualifications, emphasising the importance of accountability in public office.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behaviour of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” Obi said.
