Ide Goddy Uwazurike, President of the Credibility Group and former leader of Aka Ikenga, has lauded former military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) for his memoir, “A Journey in Service,” stating that it addresses misconceptions in Nigeria’s historical narrative. In a recent interview, Uwazurike highlighted that IBB’s account dispels the long-held belief that the January 1966 coup was an Igbo-led initiative, emphasizing that Babangida’s insights correct this narrative.

Uwazurike also called on other prominent figures from Nigeria’s past, such as General Yakubu Gowon, to document their experiences to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the nation’s history. He expressed anticipation for Gowon’s perspective, particularly regarding the events following the death of Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi and the appointment of Gowon as Head of State.

Additionally, Uwazurike advocated for the creation of 18 new states, increasing Nigeria’s total to 54. This proposal aligns with the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, which suggested that each of the six geopolitical zones should comprise nine states. Uwazurike believes that such restructuring would promote balanced development and address regional disparities.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of prudent fiscal management, asserting that Nigeria’s N54 trillion budget could be effectively implemented if political leaders curtail excessive spending. Uwazurike’s remarks underscore the need for both historical clarity and structural reforms to foster national unity and progress.
