In a dramatic turn of events, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its Acting Chairman, Umar Damagun, along with several other top officials. This development, which took place yesterday, was initiated by members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), who have been lauded for their bold and decisive action.
Among those suspended are the National Secretary, Deputy Chairman South Taofeek Arapaja, and the Zonal Vice Chairman North Central, as the party moves to address internal discord. According to Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Nigeria Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, this suspension marks the beginning of a “new dawn” for the party, which has been battling internal strife allegedly driven by a faction aligned with former APC sympathizers.
Ugochinyere condemned the suspended leaders, accusing them of attempting to dismantle the PDP from within, and celebrated the NWC’s intervention as a rescue mission for the party’s future. “The Pro-Wike APC group led by Damagun has been working to kill our party,” Ugochinyere stated.
As the PDP awaits the unveiling of a new Interim Chairman today, sources indicate that the North Central Zone is expected to produce the candidate who will lead the party into the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The NWC has also been tasked with organizing a consensus candidate for the chairman position, which will be presented to the NEC for approval.
The suspension and anticipated new leadership have been met with support from key stakeholders, who are calling for unity and vigilance during this critical period. Ugochinyere urged party members to stand firm and support this “democratic revolution” aimed at restoring the party’s integrity after months of “embarrassment and betrayal.”
The political landscape within the PDP remains fluid, with further announcements expected later today regarding the party’s future leadership and direction.
