National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian youths to channel their passion for European football into efforts to demand better governance and accountability in Nigeria.

Obi, in a statement titled “Beyond Football: The Match for a Better Nigeria,” said the quality of European football was linked to effective systems, infrastructure, security and competent governance, arguing that Nigeria had the talent to achieve similar standards.

He said, “The answer is not a lack of talent. Nigeria has produced world-class footballers who have excelled in Europe because they found systems that reward merit, invest in infrastructure, ensure security, and are governed with competence and accountability.”

According to Obi, football development cannot be separated from the broader quality of governance, noting that stadiums, academies, transport systems, healthcare, security and electricity all depend on effective leadership.

“Great football does not exist in isolation. It grows where there is good governance,” he said.

Obi said he had decided to spend the next 150 days engaging Nigerian youths in town halls, campuses, online spaces and football communities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“My message is simple: The future you admire in Europe can be built in Nigeria. But it starts with your vote,” he said.

He envisioned a Nigeria where the domestic league is competitive, stadiums are filled regularly, clubs attract sponsorship and coaches receive proper training, while young footballers would not have to leave the country as their only route to professional success.

Obi said the country could not achieve meaningful development through wishful thinking, urging young Nigerians to attach the same importance to elections that they give to football matches.

“Nigeria will not emerge through wishful thinking. It will emerge when young Nigerians decide that elections matter as much as football matches,” he said.

He described the 2027 presidential election as an opportunity for Nigerian youths to determine the kind of country they want, arguing that Nigeria should export talent because of its strength and reputation rather than because citizens are seeking to escape poor governance.

Obi encouraged football fans to continue supporting their preferred European clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

However, he urged them to remember Nigeria’s own challenges after the matches.

“When the final whistle blows, remember that the greatest match awaiting Nigerian youths is not in Europe. It is in Nigeria,” Obi said.

“It is the match for good governance. It is the match for jobs, security, education, sports development, and national renewal. And unlike football, where only twenty-two players are on the pitch, every Nigerian youth has a place in this match.”

He called on young Nigerians to mobilise and participate in the 2027 election, adding, “Stand up. Mobilise. Vote. Defend your vote.”

Obi said his weekly message to Nigerian youths would include a reminder of January 16, 2027, which he identified as a significant date in the country’s political future.

“We can create world-class standards right here at home,” he said, concluding that “that new Nigeria is possible” and that its future was in the hands of Nigerian youths.
