The current red list recently introduced by the UK to fight the rise in Omicron variant of Covid19 could be scrapped this week after reports that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has convinced colleagues to ease restrictions on travellers, Njenje Media News reports.

The move is expected to be approved in a matter of days and hotel quarantine could be replaced with testing for fully vaccinated travellers, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Recall, as previously reported by Njenje Media News, a total of 11 countries are on the red list, but soon the mandatory hotel quarantine period could be scrapped and replaced with more testing. It is unclear if those with booster shots could enjoy any exemptions.

Data suggests that with Omicron spreading rapidly worldwide, there will be limited differences in countries’ infection rates.

The return of the red list was met with fury from officials in affected African countries, while travellers complained of six-hour journeys to their hotel and ‘grim’ food.

The Nigerian minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika noted over the weekend that Nigeria is considering banning flights from those countries that included Nigeria on their travel red list as a mark of reciprocity in International Relations.

It is not clear if Britain is axing the travel red list as a result of the threat from Nigeria and other African countries.
