The Global Igbo Leaders (GIL), a coalition representing various Igbo organizations worldwide, has congratulated Senator John Azuta-Mbata on his election as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The announcement was made following the election of the new leadership team on January 10, 2025, in Enugu, Enugu State.

GIL, a non-governmental and non-politically affiliated group, was created to unite and represent Igbo interests across the globe, ensuring that the voices of the Igbo people, both at home and abroad, are heard in decision-making processes. The organization encompasses multiple well-established groups, including the Igbo World Assembly (IWA), World Igbo Congress (WIC), European Igbo Communities (EIC), Council of Igbo Communities (CIC) UK, Council of Igbo States America (CISA), and many others.

In a statement issued after the election, GIL emphasized the significance of the election in restoring the dignity of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which had been marred by irregularities in a prior election in January 2021. “The election on the 10th of January 2025 has brought hope to Ndigbo,” the release read. “Hopefully, the New Executives led by Senator Mbata will restore Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s glory.”

GIL has been at the forefront of efforts to resolve the issues surrounding the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership since the 2021 election. The organization has been committed to ensuring the Igbo people are represented by capable and transparent leadership, both at home and abroad.

In congratulating Senator Azuta-Mbata and his new executive team, GIL noted the timing of his victory as pivotal for the unity and advancement of the Igbo people. The statement emphasized the importance of Senator Mbata’s leadership, particularly at a time when Igbo unity remains a crucial issue. “Senator Azuta-Mbata, your victory comes at a crucial time for Igbo unity and advancement,” the release stated. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo has a big job now to unite Ndigbo, especially our brothers who participated in elections outside the official one. We must come together, and GIL will engage with your leadership to bring peace and unity.”

The GIL also expressed gratitude to Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, who was appointed in December 2024 to complete the tenure of Imo State’s representative in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, following the death of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. “Massive thanks to a great Leader in the name of Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu,” the statement read. “He promised and delivered. Ndigbo owe him massively, and he will go down in history as a revered Igbo Leader.” GIL acknowledged that many sons and daughters of Igbo land had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the election of the new leadership team, leading to a positive outcome for Ndigbo.

As part of its continued efforts to improve the workings of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, GIL pledged its support to the new administration, particularly in restructuring the organization’s operations. The group highlighted the need for Ohanaeze Ndigbo to become financially independent, ensuring it has the capacity to fulfill its duties to the Igbo people. GIL called for a system that will allow Ohanaeze Ndigbo to organize free and fair elections every four years. “GIL offers its support and service to ensure this regime restructures Ohanaeze’s operations such that Ohanaeze will be financially independent and have the capacity to play all the roles Ndigbo expect it to play,” the statement said.

GIL emphasized that their support would focus on strengthening the overall capacity of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to better serve the Igbo people both locally and globally. The statement also stressed the need for the organization to play a central role in addressing issues affecting Ndigbo, from cultural preservation to political representation. “This includes the capacity to independently organize free and fair elections every 4 years. GIL offers our support in the overall strengthening of the capacity of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the good of Ndigbo,” the group affirmed.
