Mama APC, Nkechi Nwaogu, Reportedly Defects To NDC, Set For Official Declaration

Distinguished Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, a former member of the House of Representatives and ex-two-term Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial Zone, has reportedly left the ruling APC despite being widely known as “Mama APC.”

Her decision is believed to be connected to the outcome of the APC primary election, where her main challenger, Hon. Emeka Atuma, emerged victorious. Sources say the conduct and outcome of the primary did not sit well with her, as she has remained noticeably quiet since the exercise.

Rumours of ongoing talks between her and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) surfaced over a week ago, prompting APC stakeholders to reportedly make efforts to reconcile with her. However, recent developments suggest she has now resolved to leave the party.

There are, however, concerns over the legality of the move following provisions in the amended Electoral Act. Reports indicate that the Independent Electoral Commission (NEC) had already closed the window for new membership registrations after the submission of e-registration on May 10, 2026, making fresh defections difficult.

Some members of the National Working Committee who spoke to journalists expressed concerns that the court judgment which created an opening for new defectors could become problematic if overturned by a higher court. According to the sources, the legal opening may eventually become a dangerous “bobby trap” for the NDC should the ruling later be reversed.

Nevertheless, barring any last-minute developments, Senator Nwaogu is expected to formally declare for the NDC today at her Okpu Umuobo country home ahead of the party primary election scheduled for May 29, 2026.
