Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has praised the commissioning of the Seraphic Psychiatric and Old People’s Home in Aguleri, describing it as a timely and humane intervention. Obi, who met with Evangelist Ebuka Obi at Lagos Airport before visiting the facility, lauded the initiative for its compassion and commitment to humanity.
He noted that the project aligns with the recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report highlighting Nigeria’s deepening mental health crisis, with over 20 million Nigerians suffering from related challenges due to economic hardship and stress. Obi recalled his own investment in the Nawfia Psychiatric Hospital while in office, stressing that mental health care should not be stigmatised but treated with the seriousness it deserves.
Highlighting the rise of substance abuse among youths, Obi recommended using such facilities as educational tools by organising school excursions to deter drug misuse. He also commended the elderly care component of the project, describing it as a moral responsibility to restore dignity and respect to senior citizens.
Obi expressed gratitude to Evangelist Ebuka Obi for his commitment to serving humanity, urging Nigerians to prioritise mental health and elderly welfare.
