France and Britain are set to co-host a video conference on Friday with countries willing to contribute to a “purely defensive mission” aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, according to the French presidency.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will jointly lead discussions on plans to restore freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway once security conditions improve.
A spokesperson for the UK Prime Minister’s office said the meeting is expected to advance efforts toward a coordinated, independent multinational framework designed to protect international shipping after the conflict subsides.
The move comes after US Israeli strikes on Iran in late February escalated tensions into a wider regional conflict, severely disrupting maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and gas exports.
